Be Ye Hearers & Doers of Good Words

One morning as I was driving to work. I had a couple of colleagues with me in the car. We made it a habit to carpool to save resources, I didn’t know one of them was monitoring my driving.

As we were driving, the lady at the passengers’ seat said to me; “you are very nice oo, you waited patiently for the children to cross, ensuring others to wait for them, that one is good, but you saw a lady driving and was stuck because the road was blocked on her lane and she had to move into your lane and you signalled to her to join our lane in front of you, and you know we are late for work”

And I answered her by saying “if I don’t do it, she would be there for long because the impatient commercial (Danfo) drivers behind me would not give her a chance to do so and she might spoil her car trying to struggle with them.”

She then said, “if it was her with the way she has been driving, she wouldn’t give you the same courtesy.

And I told her that “I cannot control the way she behaves; I can only control the way I behave”.

You see, many of us place our act of kindness on conditions, we always want instant return or a reciprocating act for our kindness. Like how can I do this for this person when I know if the case were reversed the person will not do the same. This should not be.

I know, I used to have that same mentality until I read somewhere about controlling my actions regardless of others. I had not known I was already acting it out, but what I knew was that after reading it, I made a mental note to change my beliefs and actions.

A lot of us just read and watch, but we never do anything about it. We just agree to the points make sense and we become hearers only but never doers.

That was what lead James to say this in his letters.

“Be doers of the word, and not hearers only. Otherwise, you are deceiving yourselves. For anyone who hears the word but does not carry it out is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror, and after observing himself goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.”

Your actions reflect who you are, they make up the perception of people.

We always want things to be better, but it can only start with us. Everyone making a conscious decision to do better, till it unconsciously becomes a way of life for us.

Be ye hearers of the good words, not just hearers alone, Be ye doers of those good words as well.
